The author devised the questions based on the seven main chapters of the book, The Care Quotient: Transforming Business Through People. He believes that mangers and leaders who care about the right things are the most effective business drivers. He worked with an human resource professional, Vivian Yost, to refine the questions to provide specific examples of behaviors that exemplify the characteristics that are assessed in the Care Quotient Scorecard.
Fifty individuals ranging from senior level executives to students with part time jobs were asked to complete the Care Quotient Scorecard for their “most effective boss” and “least effective boss.” In every case, the most effective bosses had much higher Care Quotients than the least effective bosses.
  • Managers should first complete the Care Quotient Scorecard about themselves from the point of view of employees. Then, they can ask employees and peers to complete the Care Quotient Scorecard to compare how the manager believes he is being perceived to how he or she is actually being perceived. It is advisable to involve human resources in this effort.
  • Human Resource professionals can incorporate the Care Quotient Scorecard into performance reviews and management training sessions and team building exercises.
  • Employees can use the Care Quotient Scorecard as a means of assessing themselves and identifying areas for personal growth.
  • Read the book, The Care Quotient: Transforming Business Through People, paying particularly close attention to the items on the Scorecard that were suboptimal. Emulate the behaviors discussed in the book.
  • Ask peers and subordinates for feedback – what are the things that you could do to show people that you genuinely care?
  • Work with a human resources professional to undergo training in the specific areas that are lacking.
